So last week, we tried an experiment.
- Set up a search string to find jobs in social media worthy of MBA level talent
- Quality them using a “would we take the job ourselves?” methodology
- Publish one a day to the @socialmediamba Twitter feed
We’ve published 7 great job opportunities so far, over 100 if you have clicked-through. This seems like something that works so we’ll continue to do it. We hope you like the links and if we can even find one person another MBA-level job in social media, we’ll have justified this entire effort.
Enjoy and to those of you still searching, good luck and keep at it!
PS – If you’ve got a job opportunity you’d like to post – DM us at @socialmediamba.
Though it’s not the worst mistake you can make, trying to portray yourself as a professional “jack-of-all-trades” can actually work against you. Unless you are going into a highly standardized position like in a leadership development program, employers are looking for you to demonstrate your unique fit for a position.
I can speak from experience that the most common reason for passing over highly qualified candidates is because there is usually one stand-out applicant with just the specialized experience a company is looking for.
To prevent this from happening, decide what you want beforehand, decide what your particular sales angle is going to be and then aggressively search out those particular opportunities. Chose your resume drops strategically, paying particular attention to language in job listings referring to skills or experience denoted by the terms like “preferred,” “strongly desired” or “a plus.” These terms give you enormous insight into what is going to differentiate the run-of-the-mill applicant from those that will go all the way to the final round.
Trust me, doing this will ultimately save you so much time and frustration. You’ll find yourself going farther and deeper into interview processes, allowing you to maximize the chances that you’ll find that perfect job rather than “just a paycheck.”

As an avid athlete, I am naturally drawn to high-paced environments that require handling pressure and tight deadlines. Naturally, I am pursuing a career in investments and acquisitions, and I knew that a Vanderbilt MBA was the next logical step in my professional progression.
My experience with Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan allowed me to develop analytical and communication skills, professional presence, and leadership. My summer with Harris Williams afforded me the opportunity to get meaningful exposure to the sell-side M&A process. After having personal responsibility for a number of documents and presentations, I have first-hand knowledge of what it takes to excel in this arena.
At this point, I am ready to launch a career, and I’m open to a number of different routes. If your firm is ready to both challenge and stimulate me, then I would love to have a talk.

I am a creative innovator. I am an ideas guy. I enjoy working passionately within a multitude of environments to create something new and exciting. I like to build. As a songwriter and artist I like to take my creative side and apply this way of thinking to business development, strategy, and product marketing and development projects. I also always concerned with the ROI.
As a marketer I am fascinated with social media. I am not sure if I fully understand web 2.0 but I am on board. Really, has anyone figured this out?
Over the summer, I put my creativity and business acumen to the test with Echo, a Ticketmaster company. There I helped develop a new business strategy and streamlined their online customer service pages. Prior to Owen, I worked for Knowledge Mosaic, a start up company based in Seattle, WA. There I helped develop new products and opened up new markets.
I am pursuing an MBA with a concentration in Marketing and Finance. In addition to my role as President of Owen AMPED (Aspiring Music Professionals Education/Entrepreneurship and Development), I serve as the Vice President for Social Impact within the Owen Student Government Association.
I received my B.A. from the University of Washington with a double major in English Literature, Society of Justice, and minor in Political Science. My favorite novel is The Invisible Man. Give it a go, you won’t be disappointed.

Jared Degnan is a 2nd Year Marketing/Brand Strategy MBA at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management.
Before coming to Vanderbilt to get his MBA, Jared was focused in sales and marketing for a number of leading think tanks and trade associations in Washington, DC including the ICBA, the National Restaurant Association and the Advisory Board Company.
Since beginning his MBA, Jared has been involved in numerous strategic projects including creating green marketing strategies for The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and developing a suite of initiatives to increase millennial brand resonance for KFC during his summer MBA internship with Yum! Brands.
In case you haven’t guessed, Jared is seeking full time employment after graduation in May 2009. If you or your company is interested in learning more about his qualifications or experiences; click here.

As a former songwriter and artist manager, interesting culture, fast-paced environments, and remarkable ideas get me “jazzed.” As a marketer, Web 2.0 freaks me out, but in a good way. I’m fascinated by emerging technologies, such as social media, user-generated promotions, and all things digital.
Since beginning my MBA, I’ve been involved in a variety of strategic projects, such as developing a marketing dashboard for Ochsner Health and improving the brand identity of Fazoli’s Restaurants. My affinity for college basketball led me to a project developing marketing strategy for Tennessee’s men’s basketball team, and in my spare time, I wrote a killer Nashville-inspired rock album.
Over the Summer, I put my leadership skills to the test. As a project leader in Vanderbilt’s Accelerator program, I led a team through a variety of consulting-based competitions, such as creating green initiative strategies for Bridgestone/Firestone, presenting new business opportunities for American Airlines, and devising a marketing campaign for a new healthcare plan provided by Humana.
While I’m technically looking for a job, I’m really searching for a culture. If you or your company is interested in learning more about my qualifications or experiences, feel free to shoot me an email, download my resume, follow me on Twitter, find me on Facebook, or even download my album from iTunes!
